Carey Price stood in front of his locker at the Habs suburban training center just over seven years ago.
His team had just gone further into the playoffs than they had ever done with Price as the starting goalie, being knocked out in the Eastern Conference final by the New York Rangers, except that Price didn’t was not the starter at the end of the series. He was injured early in the second period of Game 1 when Chris Kreider lost his balance and rushed for Price with 4:45 to go.
Price knew he was hurt. He knew something was wrong with his knee. But he still finished the period.
He played through.
“It’s the playoffs, man,” Price said, standing in front of his locker in early June 2014, laughing when asked why he hadn’t pulled out of the game. “Back then, I was just like, ‘Maybe this will go away.’ But this is not the case. It’s like that. Come to think of it, I would have liked (quit the game).
“Sometimes you hurt yourself and it’s a sting and it goes. But after 10 minutes it didn’t go away and I knew I was in trouble.
That quote, that moment from seven years ago immediately came to my mind when it was announced Thursday morning that Price had voluntarily signed up for the NHL / NHLPA Player Assistance Program. Because in this quote, Price has revealed a lot about himself. How competitive it is. His desire to win. His willingness to play despite the pain.
