BROCKTON (CBS) – Two people have died and a police officer is injured after a shootout and a standoff in Brockton on Thursday night. Brockton’s officer was shot four times after responding to a house on Taber Avenue at around 5:45 p.m.
The suspect was barricaded inside the house for hours before shooting himself, according to Plymouth County Prosecutor Tim Cruz. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Officers were first called to the house with a report of gunfire. While police investigated, another man was found dead from gunshot wounds inside a silver SUV near the house. Cruz said the man’s death was under investigation.
“Brockton police responded, shots were fired,” Cruz said. “A Brockton police officer was hit at this point, we believe, four times, including in his Kevlar vest.”
The officer was conscious and alert when he was taken to a Boston hospital and is expected to survive.
After shooting the police officer, the suspect entered the house at 62 Tabor Avenue, where he stayed for several hours. The SWAT team was called and a perimeter was set up in the neighborhood.
“Masse. State Police and Brockton Police were in constant contact and negotiated with the barricaded suspect all night,” said Cruz.
Around 9:30 p.m., the man left the house and committed suicide, according to Cruz. The names of the suspect and the man found dead in the SUV were not disclosed.
Brockton Mayor Robert Sullivan said he and Police Chief Manny Gomes would visit the injured officer in hospital on Friday.
“It also shows the serious nature of law enforcement, we have very courageous men and women who serve Brockton Police every day,” said Mayor Sullivan.
