Gearbox Software, the makers of Borderlands and the finishers of Duke Nukem Forever, have a new president. Steve Jones, their former technical director, claimed the throne. Former President Randy Pitchford has not left. He is still president and CEO of the Gearbox group at large, and still president of the branch that offers his games on television and in movies.
“Having had the pleasure of working with Steve Jones for the past 22 years, I can’t think of anyone better to lead Gearbox Software,” Randy Pitchford said in the public announcement. “Steve’s integrity and understanding of the game development process is second to none. He embodies Gearbox Entertainment Company’s mission to entertain the world and personifies our Gearbox values.”
Jones has been with Gearbox since 1999, with a history including working on multiplayer technoguts for games like Halo PC and Brothers In Arms before becoming CTO of Borderlands and its sequel and then being promoted to CTO.
As for Pitchford, he’s still president and CEO of the larger Gearbox Entertainment company, which includes the Gearbox Publishing arm and the stuff you watch division Gearbox Studios. He is also specifically president of Gearbox Studios. The announcement says he “will continue to bring his institutional knowledge of Gearbox brands and franchises to multiple creative touchpoints across the business and maintain hands-on engagement with a myriad of teams and ongoing projects.”
A Borderlands movie is in the works, with a surprisingly star-studded cast including Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Jack Black as Claptrap, Jamie Lee Curtis as Patricia Tannis, and Gina Gershon as Mad Moxxi. I don’t like Borderlands but damn it I’ll be watching anything that brings Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Gina Gershon together.
Gearbox was purchased earlier this year by Embracer Group, the vast video game empire that also includes THQ Nordic, Deep Silver, 4A Games, Coffee Stain, and around sixty other studios. Gearbox Software is also growing. They announced in August that they were opening a third studio, in Montreal, to work on the Borderlands series as well as create new things.
Tear up the big man, play us with a banger.
