Creator of Facebook unsubscribe tool banned for life

Facebook has permanently banned Louis Barclay, the developer of the “Unfollow Everything” browser extension, from using its services for the foreseeable future. In addition, he had to commit to never again designing a program that connects to Facebook’s servers, writes Barclay on the media Slate.

People can clear their entire news feed by unsubscribing from all their friends, groups, and pages through the use of Unsubscribe from All. The plugin was created in order to encourage people to spend less time on the social networking site.

According to Barclay’s letter, Facebook’s legal team informed him that he had to cease his extension. “They threatened me with legal action and suspended my Facebook and Instagram accounts,” he said in his letter.

Unsubscribing from someone is not the same as removing a friend from them. It is only the news summary that is left blank when using the program. The user maintains his friendships with the people with whom he has previously interacted. In other words, “it ensures that you can use Facebook without having to see the big picture, or that you can better select who appears there and who does not.”

Since then, the Chrome browser extension has been removed from the list of available extensions in the Web Store.
