With the arrival of No time to die, Daniel Craig hangs up the tuxedo after five films and 15 years playing one of cinema’s most famous heroes, MI6 spy James Bond. Craig’s widely acclaimed tenure hardly lasted that long.
Despite the franchise hits of all time like Casino Royale (2015) and Fall from the sky (2012), Craig almost quit the role after the 2015 release Spectrum (a movie he finished with a broken leg), even lamenting that year that he would rather “slice my wrists” than replay 007 (the actor has since said he was joking). In 2017, Craig announced he would give Bond one last chance.
“I’m really glad I did, because for a while I didn’t think I was going to do a fifth,” Craig told us on a recent virtual press day for No time to die (watch the full actor interviews above). “But the story we had in mind and all of those things came together. I rested. I am just extremely proud. I am extremely proud of all the films that we have made collectively. Because as you can imagine, it’s a pretty big effort on the part of a lot of people.
This includes producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who were on the front lines in convincing the 53-year-old actor to return.
“He was totally exhausted after [Spectre], emotionally and psychologically, he didn’t even want to think about making another Bond film, ”Wilson tells us in a separate interview with Broccoli. “He goes for it and always puts more than 100 percent into it. And it’s emotionally draining, it’s physically draining.
“He felt he had done enough and didn’t want to come back,” Broccoli says. “And we kind of allowed him that for a short time [laughs], until it is rested. And then we started talking to her again about how we didn’t feel like the story was over, that her story was over. And once we started talking to him about the possibilities, he got really excited.
Craig finally felt like he had unfinished business. And for Craig, Broccoli, and Wilson, the key was to unlock a truly moving Bond story that would give the actor’s deeply beloved personification of 007 a head start. The first receipts indicate that they were successful: No time to die is widely hailed as one of the most touching Bond films ever to be made.
Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga (True detective, the beasts of no nation) from a screenplay he co-wrote with Neil Purvis, Robert Wade, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the 25th film in the series finds Bond also trying to get away from the spy life. Having ditched MI6 and his girlfriend Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux) five years earlier and now living in Jamaica, Bond is brought back to action by old CIA friend Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) as a terrorist named Lyutsifer Safin (Rami Malek) threatens the globe with a fast-acting biological weapon.
Craig said he hopes Bond has “changed a lot” when he has been a part of him for a decade and a half, and a very noticeable development appears in No time to die is Bond’s loyalty to his love interests. It all started with his deep affection for Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale, and this continues with his relationship with Madeleine in No time to die. It is 2021 and James Bond is much less promiscuous than he has ever been.
“Look, he didn’t do too badly,” laughs Craig. “I hope we have somehow changed things. Lots of things that were okay in 1962 when they did [the first Bond movie Dr. No] are simply no longer part of the world. And I feel like having someone who reflects modern life is really important… Bond films have always kind of reflected the world around them. [them]. “
Seydoux largely attributes the gender portrayals and treatment of women in Craig’s Bond films to the actor himself, calling him a “feminist.”
Lashana Lynch, who plays rival MI6 agent Nomi, has seen this trend develop since Craig’s first rodeo.
“As soon as Daniel joined the franchise and I saw Casino Royale, I thought, ‘Oh, there’s something going on here,’ ”she said.
“Relationships have always been a challenge for him,” explains Broccoli. “And this is an area that we really enjoyed exploring, both on the romantic side of his life, but also in his relationships with the folks at MI6 that he kind of developed as a family. So we really wanted to push the character in those directions as much as possible. And Daniel was the man to do it.
