Duane “Dog” Chapman is leading a major search for Brian Laundrie – but what if he actually finds Gabby Petito’s fiancé? It turns out that Chapman, aka Dog the Bounty Hunter, is not licensed to capture fugitives. But despite some reports, the former reality TV star can still apprehend Laundrie.
Chapman has vowed to find Laundrie after an arrest warrant was issued last month. Laundrie, who has been missing for weeks, is wanted for questioning about Petito’s disappearance, as his death was deemed a homicide. Research efforts are underway in Florida, but The daily mail noted that Chapman does not have a bounty hunter or private investigator license.
In 1976, Chapman was embroiled in a drug case that took a turn for the worse when his accomplice shot and killed a man. The former A&E star has been convicted of first degree murder, so he is unable to obtain a proper license. However, Chapman’s publicist tells Yahoo Entertainment, it doesn’t impact his laundry research.
As there is an arrest warrant, “any citizen who sees [Laundrie] can hold it and hand it over, ”says Jennifer Willingham. “There are also authorized people who work with Dog and also police officers outside of duty hours. It is covered to apprehend in multiple ways. If Chapman finds Laundrie, he can detain the man until authorities arrive.
Chapman told TMZ this week that he assumes “survivalist” Laundrie is alive.
“Not alive and doing well but he’s alive,” the reality TV star said. “There’s no evidence he’s suicidal like that anywhere. And you know he hasn’t told anyone that.”
Chapman’s family is divided over his efforts. One of his daughters, Cecily, called the research a “publicity stunt”. (A&E reportedly “immediately came over” when he presented a show about it.) Lyssa Chapman congratulated her father and confirmed he was still in Florida.
