Google attempted to suppress RSS several years ago by canceling Google Reader to the dismay of countless Internet users. We’ve survived with services like Feedly, but RSS has never really been the same without Google being a big part of the experience. Today, in Chrome on Android, Google is coming back to RSS with an experiment that works a bit like an RSS reader, because why not?
In the Chrome on Android stable channel (v94 +), the New Tab page now shows a “Next” section in addition to the Discover feed that you’ve been using for some time now. This “Next” section is where the feeds from websites you have subscribed to will appear. Yes, it’s an RSS reader in Chrome!
If you don’t see the new section in Chrome yet, install Chrome Beta and you will probably see it. Alternatively, in Chrome stable, you can go through chrome: // flags and search for “web feed”. Activate this option and the new “Next” box should appear.
To subscribe to a site, like the one you’re reading, tap the 3-dot menu at the top, then at the bottom, look for a “Follow” button. Tapping on it will add that site’s RSS feed to the “Next” section of the new tab.
If you want to add multiple sites to it, you certainly can. If you want to change which ones you follow, just tap the gear icon next to the Next tap, then hit “Manage” and find the “Follow” option. To delete a feed, uncheck the box for that site and Chrome will delete its RSS feed.
Google’s Adrienne Porter Felt said today that the Chrome team has been working on it for some time and that an iOS version is coming soon. There could also be a desktop version, but that’s “a bit further”.

As of today, we are experimenting on stable Chrome with tracking functionality. You can choose which websites to follow and their RSS updates will appear on the new Chrome tab page. We’ve been working on it for a while and I’m super excited to hear what people are saying about it pic.twitter.com/GUcdSQTv3E
