Playing his first game since his triumph at Flushing Meadows, 18-year-old Raducanu won the opener but went on to battle world number 100 Sasnovich.
nu told reporters after his 10-game winning streak ended.
“At the start of the game I didn’t put any pressure on myself because in my mind I’m so inexperienced. I’m 18. I have to relax a bit.
“You could tell she was more experienced than me and went out there and executed her game plan better than me.”
Sasnovich hit 17 winners and 9 unforced errors, while Raducanu made 31 unforced errors.
“I really like playing here,” said Sasnovich, who will now face Simona Halep. “Emma just won the US Open and I lost there in the first round. So it was a little different.”
Raducanu won the US Open in an extraordinary race in which she did not lose a set.
Raducanu said she is now looking for a more experienced coach and at Indian Wells has worked with LTA Senior Women’s National Coach Jeremy Bates.
“Jeremy is a part of women’s tennis in the LTA so while he’s here he’s helping me,” Raducanu said.
“In the future, I’ll just wait and try to find the right person.”
Raducanu became the first qualifier – male or female – to win a Grand Slam title, having entered the tournament ranked 150th in the world.
“I am happy that what happened today has happened so that I can learn it and take it as a lesson,” Raducanu said. “She’s more experienced than me. She’s lost 4-2 hundreds of times.
“This is my third WTA tournament this year. I just have to not rush and put my head back on the drawing board.”
