Sony’s Play at Home initiative has been a big hit with gamers, according to PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan.
Speaking to GI.biz, Ryan said that during the life of the initiative, free games have been redeemed 60 million times by PlayStation players.
To help people deal with Covid-19 lockdowns, Sony released free games in two waves, giving people something cool amid tough times.
“It hit us as everyone struggled with the first lockdown, we thought it would be a good thing to do,” Ryan said. “We were able to do it and were very happy with the response.
“And then we went through Christmas and we started the lockdown again, and everyone… it was a little miserable. We thought it would be a good thing to pick up. So we did it again, this time spread out over a period of a number of months, and now, in fact, 60 million games have been repurchased as part of this business. “
Play At Home debuted in April 2020, with users able to download Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey – or Knack 2, if you were in Germany or China.
It was brought back in March of this year, kicking off with Ratchet & Clank of 2016. Ten more titles were added including Abzu, Enter the Gungeon, Rez Infinite, Subnautica, The Witness and Moss.
The initiative wrapped things up in April with Horizon: Zero Dawn.
Ryan said there is a possibility that Sony could resume Play at Home if blockages occur again.
