Ghostbusters: the afterlife Director Jason Reitman started off with blurry vision: “I saw a girl in my head. She is 12 and picks up a proton pack in the middle of a field. I didn’t know who she was. I saw this teenager in Ecto 1 and drifting through the wheat fields. I didn’t know who he was. And then, “When Harold Ramis passed away, I knew who they were: they were the Spenglers.”
The idea of another sequel to 1984 ghost hunters classic directed by Jason’s father, Ivan Reitman, has long wandered in purgatory. When the original actor Ramis passed away in 2014, that seemed to rule out that possibility. But young Reitman and co-writer Gil Kenan rooted the legacy of Ramis Egon Spengler’s character in the plot and his descendants in Ghostbusters: the afterlife.
Father and son Reitmans, alongside writer Kenan and actors Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Logan Kim and Celeste O’Connor gathered at New York Comic Con 2021 on Friday to talk about the upcoming film. The original ghost hunters, with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, the late Ramis and Ernie Hudson, spawned a popular franchise that included a less well-received 1989 Ghost hunters 2 sequel, cartoons, comics and a reboot in 2016 starring Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy and Leslie Jones.
A sequel to the first ghost hunters and Ghost hunters 2, Life after death presented itself as a serious and more Spielbergian take on compared to its comedic predecessors. It stars Coon as a single mother and Wolfhard and Grace as her two children moving to a dilapidated farm in Summerville, Oklahoma. The film is slated for release in November.
Young Reitman’s directorial work includes independent films Juno and Tully. He humorously disclosed the anguish of having his father, the director of the original classic, on set. “Our directors’ chairs are closer than they are right there [at Comic Con]. They were literally touching each other. That’s wonderful. Most of the time. He laughed and shared, “Imagine for a second your parents coming to work on all the decisions you’ve made and weigh in on the decisions you’ve made. And if you don’t agree, you’re going to have a fight. You can’t tell on the set, father. “
His father added, “Jason had to be the captain of this great company and find this new way to tell this story. We tried not to fight but we did fight a bit. But we were passionate and we just tried to find a way to control the passion. ”
The Spengler grandchildren have a heritage to carry. Playing Spengler Trevor’s eldest grandson, Wolfhard describes his character as “want[ing] be part of a community and be accepted. He finds this out by moving to a new city and piecing together his family life and old roots. ”
Wolfhard is no stranger to the Ghostbuster suit. “I wonder why [the project around the audition] seemed so secret, ”he said. When he found out it was ghost hunters, he was incredulous that he got it. “I was in Strange things. I had worn the [Ghostbuster] costume in an episode [of Stranger Things] and I thought it might rub Jason the wrong way.
Mckenna Grace, portraying Spengler’s young granddaughter, described her character Phoebe as “that weird, awkward girl.” She goes to this farm and finds out who their family was and [is] connect with the grandfather she never knew. Given that the film had been persistently delayed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, seeing her younger and smaller was surreal for Mckenna: “I look completely different. [during filming]. My grandma watched the trailer and she called my mom to tell her, I don’t see Mckenna in it.
Jason Reitman also teased audiences that the panel would show an exclusive clip. But he didn’t show a clip – he screened the whole movie, much to the noise of the audience. Before the screening, he concluded the panel by saying, “I love streaming and it has helped me get through the pandemic. But I like the movies. We wanted a movie to be enjoyed with popcorn, a screen, and sound.
Ghostbusters: the afterlife will be released on November 19.
