The Oklahoma No.6 made the biggest comeback in Red River Showdown history, passing Texas No.21 55-48 on a foot touchdown by Kennedy Brooks. Earlier, starting quarterback Spencer Rattler was benched in the second quarter as real freshman Caleb Williams brought Oklahoma back from a 28-7 deficit to achieve one of the biggest feedback from the history of the program.
With the game tied at 48, Williams led the Sooners on a winning touchdown, capped by Brooks for 33 yards on a straight snap. The unlikely game kept OU undefeated and at the heart of the college football playoff race.
Every break was Texas’ way to start this game. QB Casey Thompson’s first pass attempt was a bubble screen that traveled 75 yards for a touchdown. The Longhorns blocked a punt to score seconds later and take a 14-0 lead after six games.
After a Rattler fumble was mistaken for a touchdown two games later to create a 35-17 deficit, Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley listened to chants from the stands and inserted Williams, the real quarterback. No. 1 freshman in the class of 2021. The Sooners have gone on to score on six of their next seven discs, posting 25 straight points in under 11 minutes of playing time.
Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy didn’t fall easily. The real freshman caught nine balls for 261 yards and two scores for the second best receiving game in Longhorns history, behind Jordan Shipley’s 273 yards against UCF in 2009. He caught a long touchdown with less. two minutes to go to tie things up, but Brooks pulled off the long touchdown for the win.
Williams completed 15 of 24 passes for 211 yards, rushed for 88 yards and racked up three total touchdowns. Brooks carried the ball 25 times for 217 yards and touchdowns. Oklahoma WR Marvin Mims had a rebound game with 136 receiving yards and two scores.
Thompson threw for 388 yards and five touchdowns in the loss. Texas star RB Bijan Robinson added 137 rushing yards and one touchdown. The Sooners have now won six of the last seven Red River Showdown games.
