Is it more or less surprising than when he was considering running for president? Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson let down what he is call his first rap song. He is featured on Tech N9ne’s new single “Face Off” alongside Joey Cool and King Iso. The actor wrote his own energetic verse, which ends the track and includes lyrics like “Black and Samoan in my veins, my culture bangin ‘with Strange / I change the game so what’s my fucking name (Rock)”. Although he described “Face Off” as his “historic rap debut” on Twitter, this is not his first connection to the genre. Johnson appeared on Wyclef Jean’s 2000 single “It Doesn’t Matter” to shout his wrestling slogan, and he was the subject of “Pie” on WWF: The Music, Vol. 5, which gave us poetic twists such as “It’s hard to be the Rock (oh yes) / No no no NO, it really is.”
In an interview with VarietyJohnson said he recorded his verse “Face Off” in one take after getting “a little turned on” while drinking Teremana, his brand of tequila. He and Tech N9ne took to social media and met in person, before the pandemic, on the set of HBO Ballet flats. Originally, Tech N9ne’s plan was for the actor to record some kind of motivational talkout outro, but Johnson wanted to rap. He said Variety that even if he didn’t see himself pursuing a musical career, he would be willing to collaborate with “another artist – hip-hop artists, blues artists, outlaw country artists” if the song was right . We notice that he didn’t include rock artists on this list – maybe the world just isn’t ready for Rock to rock.
