A woman from upstate New York has been arrested after allegedly keeping her boyfriend’s 7-year-old son locked in a room and starving him to death, prosecutors said.
Leticia Bravo, 39, of Newburgh, faces a second degree murder charge in the starvation of her boyfriend Arturo Cuacuas’ son Peter Cuacuas, the Orange County prosecutor’s office said on Friday.
Prosecutors allege Bravo had the boy in his apartment every day except Saturdays when Bravo and Peter would stay with his father.
She reportedly kept Peter locked in a room “behind a door closed from the outside,” prosecutors said.
While in his custody in January, he stopped going online for his virtual classes, prosecutors said.
Bravo brought the boy’s lifeless body on February 10 to St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh, where the boy was later pronounced dead.
An autopsy determined he weighed 37 pounds at the time of his death and died of malnutrition.
“It is unthinkable that someone accepts responsibility for looking after a child and then denies that child the basic necessities of life,” District Attorney David Hoovler said. “It is truly disturbing how this child was hidden from school authorities before his death. “
Bravo was arrested Thursday on first and second degree manslaughter charges in addition to the murder count, prosecutors said.
Cuacuas, the boy’s father and Bravo’s boyfriend, was also charged last week with criminally negligent homicide.
