House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Traveled to Rome this weekend to meet Pope Francis on an ongoing debate on abortion in America.
According to a tweet from Pelosi’s account, the meeting, which took place in the Vatican on Saturday in a private audience, was a “spiritual, personal and official honor.”
Pelosi, a Catholic who has been criticized for her views on abortion, has argued in recent years that she believes the procedure is part of a woman’s right to choose.
Last month, Bishop Salvatore Cordileone from San Francisco, called for a “massive and visible campaign of prayer and fasting” for the conversion of Pelosi’s heart following the adoption of HR 3755, which he said “would force demand abortion across the country on any stage of pregnancy “.

“A conversion of the hearts of the majority of our representatives in Congress is needed on this issue, starting with House Leader, Speaker Nancy Pelosi,” Cordileone said in a statement. “I therefore invite all Catholics to join a massive and visible campaign of prayer and fasting for President Pelosi: pledge to pray one rosary per week and to fast on Fridays for the conversion of her heart.
Cordileone’s statement came amid a raging abortion debate, which gained momentum this month when the Supreme Court allowed Texas to implement its heartbeat bill. . The return of a conservative majority in the Supreme Court has also sparked discussions about the congressional codification of Roe v. Wade in case it gets canceled.

Pelosi previously defended HR 3755, titled Women’s Health Protection Act, and opposed Cordileone, who called the measure “child sacrifice.”
“The archbishop of the city of this region, of San Francisco, and I had a disagreement on who should decide on this [family size and timing],” she noted. “I believe God has given us the agency to honor our responsibilities.”
The Catholic Catechism teaches that humans must use their free will to reject sin, and Catholics view abortion as a sin.

The catechism section discussing abortion says procedure and infanticide “are heinous crimes”.
It states: “The inalienable rights of the person must be recognized and respected by civil society and political authority. The Catechism also warns that “when the State does not put its power at the service of the rights of every citizen and, in particular, of the most vulnerable, the very foundations of a rule of law are undermined”.

While discussing abortion, Pelosi also said that “it is none of our business how others choose their family size and timing.”
Over the summer, Cordileone insisted that Pelosi and other self-proclaimed Catholics cannot “pretend to be a devout Catholic and tolerate the killing of innocent human lives, let alone make the government pay for it.”
Pelosi also expressed support for eliminating the Hyde Amendment, a federal policy in place since 1976 prohibiting funding of most abortions through Medicaid.
