A salmonella outbreak linked to seafood that Denver-based Northeast Seafood Products Inc. processed or manufactured has sickened at least 82 Coloradans in 14 counties.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, out of 102 people in 14 states who became ill from salmonella, all but two live in Colorado or reported having traveled to the state the week before their illness. Nineteen people have been hospitalized with the disease, the food security alert said.
The agency is investigating the outbreak with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the United States Food and Drug Administration. The FDA reported that samples taken from Northeast Seafood Products on October 7 were positive for Salmonella Thompson and matched the epidemic strain.
Northeast Seafood Products has temporarily halted production and has recalled haddock, monkfish, bone-in trout, grouper, red snapper, red cod, sea perch, Pacific cod, halibut, coho salmon , portions of Atlantic salmon, snapper, tilapia, all natural salmon fillet, Pacific sole and farmed striped bass that restaurants and grocery stores have bought and sold through Oct. 7, according to the food security alert. These stores include Albertsons, Safeway and Sprouts in Colorado. Sprouts Pacific Cod is not being recalled, according to CDPHE.
A full list of the recalled foods can be found on the FDA’s website, and the CDC is reminding consumers and restaurants to throw out all recalled products, wash all containers and surfaces that have touched the food, and dispose of all items. seafood they are not sure about. Anyone who has severe symptoms of salmonella such as diarrhea, fever over 102 degrees, vomiting, dehydration, dry mouth and throat, or dizziness should contact a healthcare provider immediately.
