The Bills have spent a lot of time in the offseason figuring out ways to close the gap between themselves and the AFC Chiefs.
After the result of the fifth week of Sunday, it can be said that Buffalo has accomplished this mission.
The Bills have made it clear they are part of the AFC’s elite with a 38-20 victory over the Chiefs on Sunday night football.
It was a game that had an hour and two minute delay between the second and third quarters, but that didn’t really matter much for the end result. Kansas City allowed at least 30 points for the fourth straight game, as Buffalo smashed through the team’s defense for 436 yards.
The Chiefs took a 10-7 lead with 10:00 a.m. left in the second quarter. But from there, Buffalo controlled the game. The Bills scored 17 straight points to take a 24-13 lead in the extended half.
Safety Micah Hyde started to put the game out of reach with a 26-yard pick-six midway through the third quarter. And quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw another interception late in the quarter in Buffalo territory to keep Kansas City out.
The Chiefs reduced Buffalo’s lead to 11 points and it looked like they would have the opportunity to bring the game closer. But a key and questionable passer penalty against defensive end Frank Clark on the third down allowed the Bills to extend a practice in the fourth quarter. And Buffalo planted the nail in the coffin with the 8-yard touchdown from receiver Emmanuel Sanders with 5:51 on the clock.
Quarterback Josh Allen led the way, with 15 of 26 passes for 315 yards with three touchdowns – averaging 21 yards per completion and 12.2 yards per attempt. Allen was also Buffalo’s top running back with eight carries for 59 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown.
The Chiefs had another game with four turnovers, including three by Mahomes. He had one of the worst games of his career in the regular season, scoring 33 for 54 for 272 yards with a pair of touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. But he also lost a failed snap late in the fourth quarter on possession that could have at least given Kansas City a cosmetic touchdown.
The two-time defending AFC champions could also be starved for a while as Clyde Edwards-Helaire left the game in the second half with a left knee injury and did not return.
Kansas City is now 2-3 on the season and will travel to face 2-3 Washington in week six.
At 4-1, Buffalo will be on the road to face the Titans 3-2 next Monday night. The Bills can make another statement with a second straight prime-time victory set to win the AFC East sooner rather than later.
