- Stacey Abrams has ruled out former President Trump’s invocation of her name during GOP rallies.
- For months, Trump taunted Brian Kemp that Abrams could have been a better governor.
- “Her posture is irrelevant to the work I do or the positions I take,” she said of Trump on CNN.
For months, former President Donald Trump elevated Stacey Abrams among GOP loyalists.
Abrams, a former Democratic lawmaker in the Georgia House of Representatives who narrowly lost the 2018 state governorship election to current Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, focused on her defense of voting rights and rarely mentions the former president.
However, Trump, who is still upset by Kemp’s refusal to undo current President Joe Biden’s election victory in Georgia last fall, continued to push his former ally by repeating the claim he would prefer Abrams. in the governor’s mansion instead of his fellow Republican.
At a rally in Ohio last summer, the former president suggested that Abrams might have been a more preferable choice for the GOP than Kemp.
“By the way, maybe we would have been better if she had won the governorship of Georgia, if you want to know the truth,” Trump said. “We might have had a better governor if she had won.”
While speaking at a rally in Georgia last month, Trump again summoned Abrams to search Kemp, who was not present at the event.
“Stacey, would you take her place? That’s fine with me,” said the former president of the GOP governor, who is running for re-election in 2022. “Of course having him, I think, could be. better than having your current governor, if you want to know what I think about it. It could very well be better. “
During an appearance on CNN’s “Erin Burnett OutFront” last Thursday, Abrams was unimpressed by Trump’s fake endorsement when asked if the former president’s comments could help or hurt her .
“It’s irrelevant,” she told Burnett. “Her posture is irrelevant to the work I do or the positions I take. My responsibility is to do what I can to make sure that no matter who you are, and whoever you choose, you have the freedom to vote in the United States.
She added: “This is why we must stay focused on the assault on our democracy … the right to vote and restrict not only that, but also the ability of election workers to do their jobs.”
Abrams has yet to announce whether she will appear against Kemp next year in a possible rematch.
While Trump has not backed any of the lesser-known Republican candidates running against Kemp in the state governor’s primary, he has already backed Herschel Walker, the former NFL star and trophy winner. Heisman, who recently competed in the 2022 U.S. Senate race against Democratic Senator Raphael. Warnock.
