Boston Red Sox wide receiver Christian Vazquez ended a marathon 3 game against the Tampa Bay Rays with a two-point home run Sunday night to come up with a game to win their American League division series.
Vazquez’s nip for Kevin Plawecki earlier in the game and with a runner on base and Luis Patiño on the mound, the catcher hit a booming shot at the seats atop the Green Monster late in the 13th inning. Boston won the game 6-4 and is one win away from qualifying for the American League Championship Series.

The end did not come without controversy.

At the start of the 13th inning, Rays outfielder Kevin Kiermaier thought he had given his team a point with two strikeouts. He hit a right field shot that almost went over the fence. Instead, the ball bounced off the wall and hit right fielder Hunter Renfroe before bouncing over the wall. Yandy Diaz scored and it appeared for a moment that the Rays were going to take the lead.
However, the referees ruled that Kiermaier’s hit should be the rule of thumb by passing Kiermaier on second and Diaz on third instead of a two-out double RBI. Mike Zunino then struck out at bat to record the third out, leaving both players on base.

The fans were angry.
ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan reminded fans of the rules for the game.
“I can’t believe it. The ruling is what it is. But I can’t believe it. I can’t believe it’s a double rule of thumb. I mean Yandy would have scored standing,” Kiermaier said after the game.

Boston got a huge game from Kiké Hernández. He went 3-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs. He is also the first player to land eight hits in two games in a single season, according to MLB Statistics. Kyle Schwarber also hit a home run against Rays starter Drew Rasmussen.
Tampa Bay had a valiant performance from his offense. Austin Meadows and Wander Franco have each done circuits. Meadows finished with two RBIs and Randy Arozarena also contributed with an RBI.
