How to remap the Bixby button on your Galaxy phone

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S10 line last month and during the practical part, it was discovered that Samsung would soon leave users customize the dedicated Bixby button of the device.

In the past, the button had called Bixby, Samsung's personal assistant, with no way to really disable this feature.

This week, Samsung has updated Bixby in the Galaxy Store, giving users the ability to customize the behavior of the button.

Which devices will receive the update?

According to Samsung, Bixby key customization will be available on Bixby-compatible flagship phones running Android Pie 9.0.

This qualification boils down to:

• Galaxy S10, S10 Plus, S10E
• Galaxy S9, S9 Plus
• Galaxy S8, S8 Plus
• Galaxy Note 8
• Galaxy Note 9

How to get the update

Chances are, if you have an eligible device that has been updated to Android Pie, Bixby updates have already been installed.

Check that you have the latest Bixby updates installed on your device by opening the Galaxy Store app and tap the three-dot menu icon in the upper right corner. From there, go to My page > Updates.

If your device has not yet installed Bixby updates, a handful of updates will be present on the screen for updates. Press Update All and wait for them to install.

Make the Bixby button work for you

After installing the updates, open Bixby by pressing the Bixby button once or twice. I had to double press the button of an S10 Plus, but on an S9, it was a simple support.

Then select the three-point menu icon, then settings > Bixby key.

You have two options for the Bixby key. You can activate the personal assistant by pressing the key once or twice. But here's the interesting part: you can use the remaining parameter to launch an application of your choice.

For example, if you set Bixby for a double-press launch, you can set up a single tap to open Facebook, Gmail or the application of your choice.

If you prefer not to assign an application to a specific action, you can trigger a Bixby quick command. Bixby has some predefined quick commands that you can choose and customize, or you can create your own. Quick Commands link various actions of the device, such as disabling the NPD, enabling permanent display and reading your calendar.

There is a caveat, because of course there is: you can not remap the Bixby button to launch Google Assistant.
