A major winter storm that is expected to hit New Jersey Sunday could drop 6 to 8 inches over most of the state starting this afternoon and continue until the next morning, Monday, according to the last update of the forecasts.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for nearly all of the state in its latest briefing, which increased the forecast of total snowfall along I-95 and closer to the coast . According to previous forecasts, the heaviest snow was limited to northwestern New Jersey. The latest forecast maps indicate a significant and widespread weather threat.
How much snow will New Jersey have?
Although the National Weather Service is calling for widespread snowfalls ranging from 6 to 8 inches from Salem to Sussex counties, uncertainties remain as to the forecast, as temperatures will be around the freeze mark.
The central part of the state, along I-95, could experience a mix of freezing rain and snow, which could affect total snowfall. But the weather service pointed out that driving conditions would probably be dangerous.
"Do not just focus on the total snowfall," said the weather service during its last briefing for the storm Sunday morning. "Heavy snowfall will result in a rapid deterioration in the condition of roads."
Cape May County is the only place that is not subject to a warning or a winter notice on Sunday as of Sunday morning. It is likely that he will not see any rain or accumulation of snow during the storm. Counties of Cumberland and Atlantic are subject to a winter weather warning and could see up to 4 inches of snow and a winter mix.
