In January, the US Department of Justice opened charges against Huawei, the company's senior executive and several affiliates. The Chinese technology giant pleaded not guilty Thursday on charges of commercial theft in the United States, in the case that has escalated trade tensions between the two largest economies in the world.

In June, lawmakers warned universities that partnerships with Huawei could pose a threat to national security and called on the Ministry of Education to investigate Huawei's links with higher education.

In a statement to KSTP, the university said: "The University of Minnesota has considered it prudent to suspend relations with Huawei until economic and national security issues are solved at least ".

Many other universities across the country have adopted similar positions with Huawei.
