Danny Trevathan. Roquan Smith. Patrick Willis. Navarro Bowman. Sam Mills. The patrol of the dome. It seems that wherever Fangio has trained in his professional career, a superstar linebacker has strengthened his defense center. That's why it's no surprise that many people have asked Elway to make LSU's Devin White the next Broncos first-round pick. The 21-year-old Tiger has a range of tools and athletic tools that simply can not be trained.
LSU had initially recruited White to play on the back, but if you had told me that he had experience in safety, I would believe you. He looks so comfortable in the space and the blanket is one of the immediate strengths of his game. A big reason for this is that he has a legitimate speed.
I imagine this is one of the main reasons why it is so promising for Broncos country. Josey Jewell arrived in Denver last year with a lot of hype, but he looked like the limited athlete he was when he was forced to assume his duties. He was also likely to play the game and did not bring the kind of fast-twitch athleticism to catch him, which caused problems in the middle of the field. The type of White always shows the type of player that should be an asset against the game passes.
If you followed Fangio's comments in the combined, he discussed with Mike Klis the difference between his defense and the 2018 Broncos. The comment below stood out from me and should receive more attention than it has been so far.
The defense of Fangio 3-4 will be different from that used by 3-4 Broncos | 9news.com
"The way we played in Chicago in recent years was very different from the Broncos in recent years," said Fangio. "The Broncos played a lot of men and a lot of top men at 5 men. We have not played Chicago too much in the last two years. Especially last year. We were more focused on the areas on the first and second runs than in Denver.
When you watch the Broncos and Bears games of the last few years, they look like completely different defenses. As I mentioned in last week's Shelby Harris article, Fangio uses a 2-4 nickel formation with four field sponsors. From there, he likes to send four players after the quarterback and keep the rest of the defenders in the zone.
These will change from game to game, but if White is selected, he will have ample opportunity to qualify after the quarter. Even when Fangio moves to a 3-3 nickel set, he likes to continue to oppose blocking schemes.
Although Fangio does not visit men nearly as often as Vance Joseph or Wade Phillips, White is fluid enough to be a weapon in a man's blanket.
Devin White does a great job here, in the men's blanket, in tune with the tight final. Play in the catcher, do not get caught looking at the ball. Great stop pic.twitter.com/cQOMC5sF77

That would give a lot of flexibility to the defense of the Broncos. It sometimes happens that an offense does what is in its power to force linebackers to settle on islands. Fangio's defense with the Bears had an answer. A player like White would help the Broncos a lot.
White has some weaknesses that will need to be improved to reach her considerable potential at the professional level. The big one is his race defense can leave a lot to be desired. The tackles were a problem in the spots, but I guess this is coachable. What has bothered me on the tape, is how often he has trouble getting rid of blockers. Against teams where LSU had some very superior athletes, it was not so obvious, but White sometimes had problems with Georgia and had really struggled with Auburn last year.
That said, Galina shared some ideas on the issue that suggests that it should improve to the next level.

Aggression has been a component of Aranda's linebackers for a long time. They are really trying to hit the slope quickly and that sometimes means that offensive linemen are attracted by their appeal. Linebackers are becoming smaller and athletic, I'm not sure you want to attack them head-on. But it's less so for whites than for Aranda.
The other problem that appears on the tape is a lot less worrying for the Tiger LSU, although you've probably read a lot more. White sometimes takes bad angles. Many described this as inexperience, which did not pass the smell test. White played linebacker in high school, even though he was recruited into attack. I think he will improve in this area with a coach like Fangio, but it's remarkable.
Should Devin White be the target of the 10-year-old Broncos? He is on my short list, of course. I still think the best option is to swap and recover ammunition from 2020, but if the Broncos grabbed a player in their current selection, whites would fit in perfectly with the new system. .
In the long run, the defense will give priority to linebackers who look a lot like White. This is the key element of the Fangio system and the elite athletes on the spot make things easier. He uses them as Swiss knives. Sometimes they do blitzes, sometimes they cover, but they have to be able to shred everything that suits them.
I do not think it's a death knell, as some would have said if Todd Davis and Jewell stayed ahead in 2019, though. As I already mentioned, the Broncos head coach has already played with less important players. Most of the time, his fans find themselves in a blanket against the pass, and although Davis was roughed up for his coverage last year, he is more than capable of doing so.
