The Caps beat the Rangers 3-2 in shooting Sunday with a strange arrival

The Washington Capitals spent their Sunday afternoon in downtown Manhattan, playing an unequal game against the Rangers. There were a lot of good and new things in the Washington game, but also a lot of the same foolishness.

The Caps – and tell me if you've ever heard that – allowed the first goal of the game in the first minute, with a defensive turn-out setting up Ryan Strome. The third line answered with a goal from Carl Hagelin, his first for Washington. Midway through the first period, Andre Burakovsky got the fourth line, turning an important carryover into a decisive goal.

This advance disappeared at the end of the second period, when the Caps could not beat Georgiev and Pavel Buchnevich was left open. A close third period left us no decision, so we went into overtime, which was bad for my hypertension and did not tell us anything new.

The caps win.

  • Mike Vogel points out that the Caps dropped the first goal of the game in the first four minutes of five consecutive games. Some people will see this as a bad thing, but slow starts are actually a team tradition. It's an inheritance.
  • Andre Burakovsky demoted to the fourth line, but he missed no stage. His goal in the first period was the platonic ideal of the Burakovsky offensive: coach confident, defensive, quick defeat. He has scored two goals and two assists in his last five games.
  • In his fifth game as the capital of Washington, Carl Hagelin scored his first goal – against his former team, no less. Beyond the goal, the new guy has achieved a solid performance. He was excellent on the PK, scoring a penalty at one point and threatening an out-of-the-box opportunity. I can not wait to see how Reirden is changing its use in the future.
  • Michal Kempny almost certainly had a broken nose, but was fine, and yes it's a deliberate word choice.
  • Caps dominated the second period. Shooting attempts ranged from 30 to 14 and chances of scoring 16 to 4, but not Rangers or Caps. Alexandar Georgiev had a huge game in the net for New York. He was the main reason why it was not over in 60 minutes.
  • The organist of MSG played "Baby Shark". You know it now.
  • I did not like the performance off the top line today. Kuznetsov has had some chances, but the Ovi line has generally been outperformed by a weak opponent, and that may be the difference.

Ok, well, no Joe B suit today, so let's see what happens –

Today's efforts are particularly commendable, especially among the decisive players: Burakovsky, Hagelin and Jensen. However, the best pair in front and the best pair in defense did not have a good performance – turning what should have been two easy points for a regulatory victory into something much more marginal. The stars must be brighter.
