Amy Klobuchar says US must fight white collar crime more severely

Democratic presidential candidate AMy Klobuchar said it was appalling that Paul Manafort was given a lighter sentence than expected.

Former President Trump's campaign chairman was sentenced to 47 months in prison this week, much less than recommended by special advocate Robert Mueller.

"It was horrible for me," said the Minnesota senator during a discussion at the South By Southwest conference on Saturday. "When I saw that sentence from Manafort that day … I just thought" wow "because it deviated from these guidelines."

Klobuchar stated that during her tenure as chief prosecutor, she understood that white-collar crimes were not taken as seriously as other crimes.

"There can be two justice systems, one for the rich and the powerful, the other for all the others," Klobuchar said.

Mueller and his team have called Manafort to serve 19 to 24 years in prison for covering up millions of dollars. Muller, who was appointed to investigate Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election, claimed that Manafort had violated his plea agreement in a separate case involving lobbying and obstructing the justice by lying to the federal investigators.

Manafort, 69, is expected to be released in about three years, with nine months in jail.

Last year, Manafort was convicted of five charges of tax evasion, two charges of bank fraud and one charge of concealing foreign bank accounts.
