Special advocate Robert MuellerRobert Swan MuellerSasse: US should applaud Mueller's choice to lead the investigation on RussiaThe government's investigation into electoral interference in Russia and the question of whether the Trump campaign was concluded with the Kremlin would be funded until the end of September.

Reuters, citing three senior US officials, reported on Monday that funding for the special council office was not addressed in new budget requests from the White House and the Justice Department. Officials told the newspaper that Mueller's team is still funded by the US Treasury under specific regulations administered by the Department of Justice.

"The special council is financed by the credits of the independent council, a permanent and indefinite credit established in the finance law of 1988 of the ministry," said a spokesman of the Ministry of Justice.

The news regarding the financing of Mueller's investigation comes as it is increasingly assumed that his thorough investigation is about to end. Several reports indicated that Mueller would provide Attorney General William Barr with a report detailing his investigation in the coming weeks.

Mueller said he spent about $ 9 million in the last fiscal year, according to Justice Department documents obtained by Reuters. It is not known how much he spent in this fiscal year.

In accordance with the regulations, Mueller is required to report to the Attorney General on the status of his investigation at the beginning of each fiscal year. It is during this time that he can provide budget requests.

It's unclear whether Mueller plans to apply for the 2020 fiscal year, according to Reuters.

Trump often derided Mueller's investigation, often calling it a "witch hunt".
