Igloo, a maker of ice chests used by millions of bathers and campers – announced a voluntary recall Monday, after a little boy was briefly stuck in one of his coolers.
Igloo, based in Katy, Texas, and West Marine Retailer, located in Watsonville, Calif., Have jointly announced an action targeting five different sizes of the Igloo Marine Elite, the Igloo Marine Elite model. -quart models.
The companies also offer free kits to replace the latch of these models so that they do not lock anymore.
"It is possible that the stainless steel lock inadvertently closes where a person could potentially be locked inside," Igloo said in a statement. "We are working closely with West Marine to send customers a free latch replacement kit that you can use to easily and securely switch the current latch."
Of the recalled Marine Elite cooler sizes, 25,000 were in circulation, either sold or on store shelves, Igloo spokesman Ashton Maxfield told NBC News.
He said it was the first time the company had heard of any of its products that trapped a person inside.
"It was an isolated incident," Maxfield said. "But as soon as we heard about it, we wanted to act."
The father of the 5-year-old boy who was trapped posted a home surveillance video on Facebook regarding the incident.
"So we always see the good things and although this story ends well, we hope there is something to learn," wrote Robert Wanes, of Pompano Beach, Florida. "My son Nicholas was locked in an igloo cooler, he was playing alone and thought it was a good idea."
