The Trump administration threatens to withhold Germany's information if the country does not give up a potential contract with the Chinese telecommunications company Huawei.
The Wall Street Journal has obtained a letter dated Friday from US Ambassador Richard Grenell to the German Minister of Economy, stating that sharing of information would be limited if Huawei or other Chinese suppliers were allowed to participate in the construction of the German 5G network.
The United States urges its allies to abandon Huawei for months. Intelligence officials have expressed concern over the espionage of the telecommunications giant on behalf of the Chinese government.
The surge comes as many countries begin to embrace the next-generation wireless technology called 5G. As people become more and more dependent on the Internet, US authorities are increasingly alarmed about the potential for Chinese spying.
According to the Journal, Germany asserts that it found no evidence that Huawei had or could use its equipment to spy on its users and that it should be allowed to bid for the country's 5G network if it meets the security criteria.
Patrick Berger, Huawei's spokesperson in Germany, declined to comment on the letter but said the company welcomed the new security requirements imposed by the German telecommunications regulator.
Grenell has suggested Swedish Ericsson Communications, Nokia Finns and South Korean Samsung can handle the German 5G network.
The Hill has contacted the State Department for his comments.
