A widespread power outage is shutting down a text messaging service for Verizon customers on the east coast Monday morning, the phone company confirmed in Twitter messages.

Customers in areas such as New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida have used Twitter to complain about the inability to send text messages.

"We are currently experiencing a wireless network problem in your area," said a Verizon representative to a Pittsburgh customer in the state of Pennsylvania shortly before 10:00 am. "Our technicians are aware of this problem and are working to resolve it quickly.

Verizon tweeted similar responses and urged customers to provide their zip codes.

"@VZWSupport Hey Verizon … .can my pregnant wife to watch her, she got drunk at the control center ???" @ Codyehhhh26 tweeted.

The company replied, "I'm so sorry that you can send an SMS to your pregnant wife now. I know how important it is. Let me check and see what happens, Cody. Can you tell me your city and nearest cross streets? "

The DownDetector.com website indicates that the blackout is concentrated in the tri-state area but extends as far as Florida and Chicago.

The cause of the network problems is not clear.
