McCarthy breaks with Ryan: "I think this president will be re-elected"

"I think this president will be re-elected," McCarthy said in response to a question from CNN at the GOP group's weekly press conference. "I believe this president could run on a lot of different items."

The California Republican's firm prediction on Trump's chances for 2020 came in response to a remark from Ryan, who said Monday that he thought some Democrats could beat Trump, according to a report by Treasure Coast Newspapers.

"The person who defines this race will win the race," Ryan said. "If it's about Donald Trump and his personality, he's not going to win it."

Asked about Ryan's statement, McCarthy replied, "I do not agree" and proposed an expanded defense of Trump's case on several fronts.

Ryan, from Wisconsin, left Congress at the end of his last session and entrusted the GOP's leading role to McCarthy. Unlike Ryan, whose support for Trump was punctuated by occasional criticism, McCarthy was a staunch public defender of the president. On Tuesday morning, he rejected the idea that Trump's personal style could be problematic for his own reelection.

"I think you are targeting an hour-long gathering time," McCarthy said of Trump's speeches.

Ryan made his comments, as reported by Treasure Coast Newspapers, at a conference in Vero Beach, Florida.
