Despite his enormous power, Captain Marvel is not the perceived and all-powerful weapon of the majority of his own film.
** SPOILER WARNING: This story contains spoilers for Captain Marvel. **
For a long time, we thought that the Tesseract, the light cube cube of the stone of space, was hanging in a facility sanctioned by S.H.I.E.L.D. Maybe he was introduced to the occasion for various tests, but otherwise, we thought that he was living a quiet life, without heroes, afterCaptain America: the first avenger until appearing on Loki's radar in 2012 The Avengers.
Captain Marvel has freed us from this hypothesis.
The involvement of Tesseract in Captain Marvel It was a surprise, it is the least we can say, but it probably should not have been. This damn cube was responsible for many problems in the first phase of the MCU; Red Skull and the rise of Hydra for one, and the Battle of New York for another. Given that Captain Marvel takes place between (most) Captain America and The Avengersit was the real estate of choice for a return to simpler times – a time before Space Stone removed half of life in the universe.
But among all this bad Space Space press, between the Nazi weapons and the doors of opening for the extraterrestrial armies, the Tesseract has done good in the universe in manufacturing Captain Marvel. It turns out that all the power of consumption can be positive. It depends on who is handling it.
The involvement of Tesseract in this film however raised many questions among fans. How did it happen? What happened? Did not this thing exist long enough? The answer to all these questions (and more) can be found below in this brief history of Tesseract's time in the Marvel film universe.
ASGARD AT EARTH
The first avenger In his opening scene, Johann Schmidt (the future red skull) presented his monologue of the glorious story of Tesseract. "The Tesseract was the jewel in Odin's treasure room," he says before finding it and taking it. Odin brought the Tesseract to Earth to secure him and, for centuries, humans kept him while they worshiped the Asgardian gods.
Through his research, Johann discovered Tesseract's powers and sought him out for the use of Hydra. As we all know, it would go terribly wrong, Red Skull would eat it (and end up on another planet as a cursed guardian of the soul stone), and the cube would fall into the Arctic alongside Captain America.
The old man guarding the Tesseract in a church in Tønsberg, Norway, said: "You can not control the power you hold, you will burn!"
HOWARD STARK AND S.H.I.E.L.D.
As far as we know until Captain Marvel, it is here that the history of Tesseract stopped until the Avengers.
At the end of Captain AmericaHoward Stark and a team of technicians find the Tesseract at the bottom of the ocean. It seems that they have traced its energy signature in the hope of finding Cape, which they have not managed to do for decades. But they did the Tesseract – and the boy, did it cause some extra problems
MAR-VELL AND THE KREE-SKRULL WAR
Mar-Vell, a kree scientist named Wendy Lawson, comes to Earth to work on a light-speed engine that will help the Skrull escape from the Kree embrace. We can assume that she came to Earth specifically because she knew that the Tesseract – and therefore the Stone of Space – had been preserved here, but we still do not know how Tesseract became involved in his project after Stark discovered it.
Enter Carol Danvers, who helped Dr. Lawson test this engine at top speed as part of a joint US Air Force / NASA program called Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. Dr. Lawson exploited Tesseract's energy, made the Light-Speed Engine, and was thwarted by Yon-Rogg and Kree. Yon-Rogg killed Lawson and, to keep the engine out of reach of his hands, Carol destroyed it.
Carol then accidentally absorbed the Tesseract energy contained in the Engine, which gave her all these fantastic cosmic powers.
But the Tesseract itself was not part of the engine, but part of its energy. The Tesseract was actually sitting in the lab orbiting Lawson's Land and staying there until Carol returned to Earth six years later and found his memories. Carol, Nick Fury, Maria Rambeau, the Kree Talos and Goose the cat / Flerken find the Tesseract, put it in a lunch box in Fonz and save the day before giving the Tesseract to S.H.I.E.L.D. To keep safe.
THE BATTLE OF NEW YORK
Assuming the MCU does not pull another fast on us, we can safely say the Tesseract has relaxed in a S.H.I.E.L.D. storage / testing for the next two decades. Fast forward until 2012 and Loki arrives on Earth, steals the Tesseract under the collective nose of S.H.I.E.L.D. and kidnaps Dr. Erik Selvig to build a portal using Tesseract's space stone powers.
They succeed and the portal opens above Manhattan to free an army that will forever be the focus of the MCU.
Side note: Of course, Loki is not the only one to use the Tesseract for less than salty purposes, the Avengers discovering that SHIELD, under the orders of the World Security Council, was developing hydra-esque weapons using the 39, considerable energy of the Tesseract. Not cool, guys. You just know that all along The AvengersNick Fury thought "It's not yet that fucking shit thing."
The Avengers eventually defeat Loki, however, and Thor takes his misbehaving brother and the Tesseract to Asgard.
FROM EARTH TO ASGARD
With the Tesseract on Asgard, Heimdall uses his energy to repair the Bifrost before returning it to Odin 's safe with a host of other magical items. Thor: Ragnarok it happens (watch the movie if you want to know more than that because I do not explain it here) and when Loki will destroy the crown of Surtur, he falls on the Tesseract.
By the time Ragnarok is over, we do not know if Loki actually took the Tesseract, but, like, we knew it. That's Loki we are talking about. Of course, he took the stupid Tesseract.
"YOU ARE REALLY THE WORST BROTHER"
Enter Thanos and his plan of genocide. The Asgardian ship is attacked, people die and Loki abandons the Tesseract to save Thor. Thanos crushes Tesseract's fist as though it was not a plot for 10 years or whatever to recover the stone from the space.
Then half of everyone dies. The end.
