An Alaska Airlines flight to Seattle makes a U-turn after the crew has shut down the engine

SEATTLE – An Alaska Airlines flight to Seattle from Portland made a U-turn Tuesday morning after the crew had to stop one of the engines before landing at PDX, according to a statement by Alaska Airlines .

Shortly after takeoff Tuesday around 10:30 am, pilots of Alaska flight 2228 were informed that there was a problem with the speed control of the propeller, the statement said.

The crew then stopped one of the engines (standard procedure) and returned to PDX.

The plane landed unhindered about half an hour after takeoff.

"The planes are equipped with two engines, so that in the unlikely event of a problem with any of the engines, the pilot can still land safely.Although single-engine operations are rare, our pilots are trained in these situations, "said Alaska Airlines in the statement.

The aircraft was a Bombardier Q400, which is not a Boeing aircraft.

Alaska Airlines announced Tuesday afternoon that it was working for the 76 guests and the four crew members to resume their route on a different aircraft.
