Authorities announced Wednesday that a body discovered earlier this week had been confirmed as being a missing mother of North Carolina.

Following a forensic autopsy, the body was identified as 38-year-old Diana Alejandra Keel, the Nash County Sheriff's Office announced in a press release posted on Facebook. The department has described the situation of "investigation for murder".

Keel, missing on Saturday, was last seen the day before by her husband, Rexford Lynn Keel, authorities said in a previous press release. Her employer said she had not been to work for a few days, according to the sheriff's office.

"The most difficult aspect of this case is a ten-year-old son and an eighteen-year-old girl are without their mother," said Sheriff Keith Stone.

On Tuesday, employees from the North Carolina Department of Transportation discovered a woman's body while working near Leggett, about 30 minutes from Nashville, the press release said.

The investigators on the case also followed another incident in 2006 called the "death investigation", which concerned the missing woman's husband and his previous wife, Elizabeth Edward Keel, according to the sheriff's office.

"The 2006 incident would also have occurred at the same address as the current missing person regarding Diana Alejandra Keel," the press release said. "Dr. Dourty of the forensic pathologist's office conducted the forensic autopsy. Dr. Dourty stated that the death of Elizabeth Edward Keel was an accidental death, based on head trauma, which struck her forehead at the corner of the concrete steps of the house.
