MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) – Naomi Osaka's first place went down on Saturday against tour veteran Hsieh Su-Wei in the third round of the Miami Open, 4-6, 7-6 (4). ) and 6-3.
The surprise came shortly after the withdrawal of Serena Williams, eight-time champion, because of a left knee injury.
The departure of Osaka was matched by a woman among the best. It was the first time in 64 games that Osaka was losing after winning the first set.
Hsieh, 33, closed the match with a forehand volley and then started crying as the stadium crowd cheered for her performance. She has three more victories over the top five players, including a surprise from No. 1 Simona Halep at Wimbledon last year.
