"Our performance of Extraterrestrial It really proves that you can do so much with so little and as long as there is a passion to do these things, they are possible, "Steven Defendini, 32, an art teacher at the school, told BuzzFeed News. artistic director of the piece

Defendini said he and his team of six students built the 15 sets of the room, as well as costumes including four astronaut suits and two extraterrestrials.

"We do not really have a budget, we recycle everything, everything is recycled and recycled 10 times until we get the look we need," Defendini said.

He explained that for the costumes of the astronaut, the jackets had been made from moving blankets, the pants came from second hand stores and the helmets using carpet foam and bottle caps.

A set, a computer room, was made from egg cartons insertions. A local store in New Jersey donated a handful of moss.

Defendini said that he would drive recycling night by searching for items such as a vacuum cleaner rest or exercise equipment that could be incorporated into sets and costumes.

"To get something of this caliber, every set, every costume is reused in one way or another," Defendini said.

He congratulated the students – along with Perfecto Cuervo, the director of the play, and Brian Bonacci, the technical and lighting director – for their creativity and their willingness to do something different. "They worked very hard all year," Defendini said.

Defendini said that the annual game of the school – last year was Night of the living dead – usually only has a small number of supportive parents.

But the reaction to this year's performance was different. "We really did not know if people would laugh at what we were doing," Defendini said.

He said that when the curtains opened to the room, he could hear "audible gasps" when the audience saw the decor and costumes of the astronaut.

"When the extraterrestrials appeared, they were screaming," said Defendini.

I love the fact that North Bergen High School played alien last night while I play at school, so I will continue to tweet about how great it is … everything was made from recycled materials … so amazing that I'm so proud of my city

It was only when he and two other students were cleaning the auditorium Saturday morning that he saw the photos and tweets of the room go viral, and that his phone started ringing local media. .

"We did not expect that," Defendini said.

He added that he hoped the school would be able to find another place in the calendar for the show to have a third performance.

"I know that children and actors are more than happy to come back," he said.
