A major forest fire has charred thousands of acres in the Penn State Forest in Burlington County.
This triggered Saturday afternoon, but smoke and haze were experienced as far north as Sunday in Bergen County. On Sunday morning, DEP officials said the fire was under control at 50%, or about 8,000 acres.
Route 72 at Barnegat remains closed in both directions between 532 and 539.
There were some voluntary evacuations on Saturday night, but the authorities indicated that no further evacuation was necessary at the moment.
Officials stated that no one had been injured and no structure had been burned.
