Luke Kornet uses his final player to impress Knicks brass

Frank Kornet arrived in Manhattan just in time to see his son Luke return to the original formation – and perhaps even future Knicks projects.

Frank is a former Milwaukee Bucks 6-9 combo striker and a Vanderbilt star, who is now a girls' coach in high school in Nashville. His season ended, former Kornet arrived in New York to attend the last four games of the Knicks six-game tour.

On Saturday, Knicks head coach David Fizdale decided to set up Mitchell Robinson as a starting point and Kornet, behind the arc, to power for the last seven games of the season. This veteran center DeAndre Jordan has been put on the bench, a DNP player in the last two games.

Kornet woke up Saturday with a 17-point win against the Heat, before shooting down the Bulls on Monday with a career-high 24 points. He hit in 5 of 7 3 points.

Kornet, 23, is in his second season and is a free agent this summer. The club will analyze how it works in tandem with Robinson to decide whether to sign it or not.

Kornet is listed at 7 feet 1, but his dad told The Post that his son is now 7-1 without shoes. It's unclear why the Knicks do not give it the traditional 1 or 2-inch rating above the no-shoe measure.

"He's fine," said Frank at the Garden. "He comes to work every day, whether he plays or not, and he puts the work in and gets better. He has always been like that as a player. This shows his progress. "

Revealed in 2017 by Vandy and signed by former team president Phil Jackson, Kornet has a final audition to consolidate himself as a goalkeeper.

"You never know what the future holds," said Frank Kornet, who also had a 3-point range. "It's wonderful for him in New York. He loved it here. It's a great place to play basketball, a fantastic city. He benefits every minute. He just needs to keep putting in the work. You improve your weaknesses – and your strengths – and hope that good things will happen. "

He looked good alongside Robinson, who emerged as the Knicks' best prospect and potential starting point next season.

"They have chemistry together," said Fizdale. "Luke extends the word for us. Mitch puts pressure on the rim. When they have the ball in their hands, they try to get down and involve others. "

Kornet will probably never appear as a starting material – he is too slow as a defender-switch – but could be a solid bench for years to come.

Fizdale called Kornet the smartest player in the club, moving the ball and guiding his teammates to the defense position. His father and uncle, John Kornet, a star of Canisius, coached him into youth leagues.

"Playing with Mitch is great," said Kornet. "It's great to have us both. We have the length and you can have one guy and another protect the rim. Playing with him defensively is great. Offensively, I hope that I will be able to speak and that he will be able to threaten to break it. He is still a target of lob. On both sides, it works pretty well.

Kornet was raised at the starting center after Christmas and was effective before a sprained ankle that beat him for five games in late January / early February. Kornet said he had "lost the pace" on his return, and Jordan arrived in an exchange.

From February 11 to March 22, Kornet shot 19.4% in 12 games and no longer played a pivotal role in the rotation. He even went quietly to Ligue G for two games.

On Saturday morning, assistant coach Keith Smart found some footwork problems when he was released.

"Smarty noticed some things about the film with my feet, I had to be more vigilant and more engaged when I caught it," Kornet said.

A big finish could give Kornet a 2019-2020 comeback on a formation that should be radically different.

Her mother Tracy Kornet, TV host in Nashville, takes off her journalist cap and greedy roots on his Twitter account for his son, whose two-handed thunderbolt was one of Monday's highlights.

"New York has been great for me," said Kornet, who exceeded his minimum of $ 1.6 million. "As for the future, I'm just trying to do my best with the rest of the season."
