The eyes were on Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman on Wednesday for their second federal court appearance, the first in Boston, for their role in the College of Operation Varsity Blues admissions scam. And, although a date with Lady Justice is very different from a red carpet, familiar ground for Hollywood stars, the clothing worn by the accused still plays an important role.
"This is a serious legal proceeding," San Francisco-based lawyer Debra F. Bogaards told Yahoo Entertainment, who has been advising many clients and experts on apparel, depositions and mediations through his cabinet, Bogaards Law-. "The so-called federal crime in this college admissions scandal centers on fraud, which goes to moral turpitude and morality. This comes at a time when the country is hungry for a leader endowed with character, integrity and ethics. The accused must therefore be dressed to express the seriousness and understanding of the weight of the charges. "

Hair is as important as the wardrobe – it must be neat and slim. While Loughlin seemed to have a recent eruption, a more structured style – a low ponytail, a bun or a French braid – helps to create a more serious look.
But, in general, Loughlin "just looks too sunny, light and windy," thinks Bogaards. "It is not the time of the red carpet. When you look at Loughlin with a smile, I wonder if she understands the seriousness of the charges. "

"What could she possibly bring to the court she needs during the hearing?" Asks Bogaards. "This is not Let's make a deal Monty Hall can ask him to look for a spoon or boiled egg. A small black handbag, not designed by a designer, would complete the tailor-made, conservative and serious look for the shorts. The goal is that it looks contrite, remorseful and shameful – that's what the public wants and a neutral and appropriate conservative look. "
The Bogaards Approved Women's Wardrobe List is a costume or dress with a cardigan. The arms should always be covered. There should be no neckline or neckline blouse, large patterns, tight or short skirts, stiletto heels or open-toed shoes. All designer labels must be left at home – up to a person's shoes – with all the flashy jewelry.
"It's not that we are superficial"
What a door in court is important because you do not want the judge or jury to be distracted by something in your wardrobe, says Bogaards. You want a thoughtful and successful look and you do not want a thing about it to go away.
"That's why we talk about their appearance," says Bogaards. "It's not that we are superficial and that we believe the garment makes you look good. But I want the jury to listen to what my client has to say at the helm and that he is not biased about what he is wearing or that he is distracted. "
And Huffman and Loughlin perfectly master the refined appearance of the red carpets. After all, they both play showbiz since the 1970s and have stylists at their disposal.

"When they're on the red carpet, they win it," says Bogaards. "They have a glamorous dress that goes to the right places, to makeup, to earrings. Every thing is adapted to this glamorous look, it's the same thing when we go to trial. You must have a complete outfit for your shoes, hair and purse. "
And although we have seen celebrities and pseudo-celebrities take liberties (from Martha Stewart's fur to Lindsay Lohan's Louboutins to simulate the cleavage of socialite Anna Delvey Sorokin), they have no more room to maneuver as your average litigant in court.
"No, the rules are universal," says Bogaards. "Plus, with celebrities, they know better. We know that they hire stylists to get their glamorous image just for the red carpet. They should also hire stylists "to get the good, conservative image in court."
Loughlin and Huffman must decide on their lawsuit or the conclusion of a plea agreement with prosecutors, these agreements stating that they are punishable by at least a term of imprisonment.
