A week after an overturned tanker caused a nightmarish ride around DC, another major incident on the Beltway caused headaches Thursday afternoon.
Circulation on the capital Beltway had been arrested following a semi-trailer accident and a fire between exits 173 (Van Dorn) and 170 (Springfield) at Alexandria.
The semi-trailer hit the wall of the jersey of the inner loop at 13:35. and overturned part of its cargo on the lanes of the outer loop, according to a statement from the Virginia Department of Transportation. This cargo of insulation then caught fire, police said. the the driver is safe.
At 1625, all traffic lanes were reopened and the cleanup was complete, but it was still slow around the scene.

Earlier, VDOT warned that impacts could be felt even in rush hours. "Think about staying at work or at home or staying out of the highway. Commuters should avoid the area and look for alternative routes, "they said in a statement.
Some auditors affected by the incident shared their views with WTOP, and that was about what we could expect.
"I spent half an hour in the bumper-to-bumper, as if nothing had stopped," said one of them.
Another listener was stuck since 14h10. "We are moving slowly, but at least we are not sitting," she said.
Metro added cars and trains to the blue line to welcome commuters affected by the accident.
The incident comes exactly one week after a spilled oil tanker blocked the inner loop near the American Legion Bridge and disrupted traffic for more than 13 hours.
