"We are going in a slightly different direction, Ron is a good man but we are going in a more difficult direction, we want to go in a more difficult direction," Trump told reporters on Friday at the White House.
Thursday evening, the White House informed the Senate that she was withdrawing her candidacy for Vitiello to head the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to a letter obtained by CNN.
Trump has appointed Vitiello, who has led ICE on an interim basis since the end of June, to head the agency in August. Previously, he was Chief of the US Border Patrol and Acting Deputy Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection.
Earlier Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee ruled on his candidacy at Democrats' request.
This vote took place after two previous delays in his appointment, which led him to wonder if he would be confirmed for the position.
Trump has not named any other potential candidates.
