The shooting was an "isolated domestic incident" in a hangar car park, said Captain Chad Vincelette.

A sailor fired several times on a woman, said Vincelette. The woman was taken to the Virginia Beach General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The naval police fired and killed the sailor, said Vincelette.

Mariners were not identified until next-of-kin notification.

The shooter had only one handgun, said Vincelette. The officials are studying how he had it at the base.

Naval Air Base Oceana was locked approximately one hour after firing.
