OKLAHOMA CITY – With assists on the top three baskets of the Thunder in just over a minute Friday against the Detroit Pistons, Russell Westbrook has earned a triple-double for the third consecutive season.
Paul George hit a wing jumper set up by Westbrook with 10:54 to go in the first quarter, giving 730 assists to Westbrook for the season. Since he is able to finish the regular season with up to 73 games played, he can average no less than 10 assists.
Westbrook has become the first player since 1962 – and the second of all time – to achieve the average of a triple double in the 2016-17 season. Last season, he did it again, needing 16 rebounds on the last night of the season and 20 to ensure the average.
Westbrook has 31 triple-doubles this season, tied for third in one season. He holds the record of 42 triple-doubles in one season, established in 2016-17. On Tuesday, Westbrook went into history by becoming the second player to release a 20-20-20 match, with 20 points, 20 rebounds and 21 assists. Earlier this season, he made history in the NBA by recording a triple-double in 11 consecutive games.
By entering Friday's game, Westbrook averaged 23.0 points, 11.1 rebounds and 10.5 assists per game.
