Finally! Apple could consider breaking iTunes

The death of iTunes could finally be on the horizon. Or at least, the downsizing of iTunes certainly seems to be.

IOS developer, Steve Troughton-Smith, revealed today that he had uncovered evidence regarding Apple's plans to create separate apps for music, podcasts and books. iTunes has slowly turned into a bloated beast during the last decade. Mac users would like the application to be simplified. But Troughton-Smith warns not to give you too much hope for now.

We first noticed that Apple may be considering doing something radical with iTunes when it releases its press release for the next Apple TV + service. The very last line of the press release mentioned that movie rentals and TV shows would be transferred to the TV application.

"The Apple TV app will become the new home for the hundreds of thousands of movies and TV shows currently available for purchase or rental on the iTunes Store."

iTunes must die

Worship of Mac contacted Apple for more information on what this change would mean for iTunes, but the company has never responded. Troughton-Smith thinks that Apple will create separate applications for different categories of content under macOS 10.15 and the Marzipan project.

Troughton-Smith has built a solid disc by discovering clues about future Apple products and software by delving into iOS and macOS code. Breaking iTunes seems like it should have been years ago, but it looks like all the pieces are finally coming together to make it happen.

Apple gave developers a glimpse of Marizpan at the global developer conference in 2018. The special project aims to allow UIKit-based iOS apps to run natively on Mac. The first phase of cross-platform applications is expected by the end of 2019. Apple is creating its own cross-platform applications to show what is possible. Starting with separate applications for its services seems logical before moving on to more complex and powerful applications.

We'll probably learn more about Apple's plan for iTunes at WWDC 2019. The annual developer conference will be held in San Jose, California June 3-7.
