The detectives arrested a Rockaway man and his girlfriend Friday for the murder of his wife, whose charred remains were found Thursday at a Staten Island warehouse.
Michael Cammarata, 42, and Ayisha Egea, 41, from Beach 56th Place in Arverne, have been charged with second degree murder, concealment of a human corpse and falsification of material evidence related to Jeanine's death Cammarata, 37, from Staten Island. .
The victim was the separated wife of Michael Cammarata; the two men were reportedly in the process of divorce and fighting for the custody of their children. Jeanine was last seen alive on March 31 in Queens; she had told the family that she was going to visit her children at Michael's house.
According to Staten Island Advance, Jeanine disappeared just two days after serving her divorce with her foreign husband.
Michael Cammarata was arrested on April 3 after confessing to the police that he had already assaulted his wife, reported WABC-TV. On April 5, the Medical Examiner's Office identified these remains as those of Jeanine Cammarata.
"The investigation into the disappearance of Jeanine Cammarata is now officially an investigation for murder," said Detective Chief of Police New York Dermot Shea. tweeted on Friday. "Working closely with @StatenIslandDA, we arrested Michael Cammarata and Ayisha Egea, both charged with 2 ° murder."
Members of the 120th Area Detective Brigade opened an investigation on April 2, after learning that Jeanine Cammarata had never been to work at the Staten Island Public School where she was teaching.
According to reports, the police came to know and retrieved a video footage of Michael Cammarata and an unknown accomplice who allegedly carried a large bag of Queens to the Staten Island Storage Center.
On April 4, police searched the area and found charred remains, later identified as Jeanine Cammarata, in a storage room, the Staten Island Advance reported.
The children of Cammarata, meanwhile, were placed in preventive detention, according to published reports.
Law enforcement officials said Thursday that the Richmond County Attorney's Office (Staten Island) would pursue the case under an agreement with the Queens District Attorney's Office.
