Senator Bernie Sanders on Friday canceled his opposition to reparations and approved a federal law to study the issue, which was at the center of the battle for the Democratic presidential nomination.
"If the House and Senate passed this bill, I would sign it, of course," Sanders said at Al Sharpton's annual conference in Midtown.
"I would say this, you need a study.
"But let me also say this, that I think what we need to do – and [Rep.] Jim Clyburn, from South Carolina, spoke about it, that is, paying real attention to the most distressed communities in America, "he added.
This is a change from his previous dismissive comments on repairs last month.
"I think for the moment, our job is to deal with the crises facing the American people and our communities, and I think there are better ways to do that than just write a check," he said. he told ABC, "The View," on March 1st.
Sanders made his final comments as the second presidential hopeful to speak at the Sharpton conference.
Vermont lawmakers followed California senator Kamala Harris, another leading Democratic candidate of 2020, who led the day.
