Virginia's score against Auburn is remarkable: the Cavaliers survive late against the Tigers to win their first game for the national title

MINNEAPOLIS – Virginia, the only No. 1 seed to qualify for the Final Four, advanced Saturday night with a 63-62 win over Auburn at M & T Bank Stadium.

The game was played at the speed of Virginia, with patient possessions for Wahoos in attack and limited fast break opportunities for the Tigers usually at the peak of speed. Ty Jerome had one of his best games in the 2019 NCAA tournament, coming off a few early shots and finishing with 21 points on a 8-on-16 shot.

Auburn pushed late with a 9-0 run in the final minutes of the match, reducing Virginia's lead to one with 2:17 to play to finally take the lead. Virginia finally scored the final six points of the match thanks to a foul by Kyle Guy in the final second of a 3-point attempt.

Guy, an 81.8% free throw shooter on the season, toppled two of the three free throws before Auburn took a break. After the break, Guy lost the last free throw.

"It was a great draw by the coach.We ran throughout the year.I had a lot of great shots from this corner," said Guy about the game that led to the fault. "I had confidence in myself [at the line]. That's what we dream of. "

When asked about the game, Tony Bennett joked that his father, legendary coach Dick Bennett, would be frustrated with the way Virginia had defended himself, but he hoped the latest criminal call against him guy was good. After the game, any controversy around the 3-point foul was triggered by a CBS review on what appeared to be Ty Jerome's double dribble in the final seconds before Auburn's foul on the floor.

The result is sure to be debated, but the result is final. Guy has knocked down three free throws and Virginia will play for the first time for a national championship. Tony Bennett and the Wahoos will face Michigan State or Texas Tech Monday night on CBS.
