A Texas state soldier was in critical but stable condition Sunday morning after being shot down as he approached a driver who had fled the scene of a accident near the US-Mexican border, authorities said.
Further information on the condition of the soldier, as well as his name, was not immediately available.

The soldier was repeatedly hit late Saturday and was taken to a hospital in Edinburg, where he was operated on and "fought for his life," Hidalgo County sheriff Edidal Guerra wrote on Twitter. Edinburg is about 64 miles northwest of Brownsville in the border area of the state.
At that time, many security forces and government sources told the KGBT-TV channel in Rio Grande Valley that the soldier had been left "mentally dead," but that remains to be confirmed.
The suspect, identified as Victor Alejandro Godinez, escaped immediate capture but was arrested early Sunday in the Edinburg area. the authorities said. The police then confirmed that Mr. Godinez is an American citizen residing in Edinburg.
The unidentified soldier was responding to a report of a car accident around 8:45 pm Saturday, when the driver fled on foot, said the Texas Department of Public Security (DPS) in a statement. The soldier was shot after locating the suspect.

DPS said the agency had been working with local law enforcement to find the suspect. Witnesses said they saw tactical units and a SWAT team probe the area, according to the monitor, a newspaper based in McAllen.
The investigation was ongoing and DPS stated that more information would be released as it became available.
