Netflix explained the "technical reasons" for which it disabled AirPlay and claims that because it can not know which device the stream is sent due to protocol changes, it does not support this feature.
Netflix launched AirPlay support in 2013.
In a statement to AppleInsider and other sites, Netflix blamed the removal of the feature on Apple and the authorization of AirPlay on third-party TVs.
We want to make sure that our members enjoy an exceptional Netflix experience, regardless of the device used. Thanks to the support of AirPlay on third-party devices, we can no longer distinguish the devices (which is an Apple TV compared to what is not) nor certify these experiences.
As a result, we decided to discontinue support for Netflix AirPlay to ensure that our quality standard for signage is met. Members can continue to access Netflix via the built-in application via Apple TV and other devices.
At the moment, it's not clear what Netflix wins knowing which TV is used, apart from collecting data. It is also not clear what society is incapable of "certifying these experiences" from the technical point of view.
Netflix has made it clear that apps on iOS and Apple TV are not affected for native playback on the device on which they are installed. However, in the future, users will not be able to use AirPlay to stream content to another device.
The modification of the application strategy was noticed on Friday in an update of the official Netflix Help Center web page, which now asks iOS device users to connect to a TV using the Chromecast feature of the TV, the second Netflix screen or a physical cable. Customers attempting to stream video content to an Apple TV or AirPlay-enabled device now receive an error message.
At CES 2019, Samsung, Sony and Vizio each revealed the future support of television hardware for Apple's streaming protocol in separate ads. Korean technology giant LG followed suit in March.
Netflix's AirPlay removal comes just two days after Vizio launched a beta version of its SmartCast 3 software that supports AirPlay 2 and HomeKit.
