BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Buffalo Sabers fired their coach Phil Housley after two mediocre seasons and after the team extended their worst drought in the playoffs for the eighth consecutive year.

The team made the move on Sunday, one day after the Sabers' season ended with a 7-1 win in Detroit. The Sabers finished 13th in the Eastern Conference standings and joined the Philadelphia Flyers 2016-17 becoming the second NHL team to miss the playoffs of the same season in which they won at least 10 consecutive games.

Housley, 55, is a Hall of Fame defenseman who spent his first eight seasons in the NHL in Buffalo, without giving away a semblance of success to a franchise that has not won a playoff since its final in 2007.

Housley shoots after the Sabers have collapsed in the last four months.

They have a 2-7-1 record in their last 10 games and were 16-33-8 with a record 10 consecutive franchise record wins ending in late November.
