Two goals from his replacement, Gerard Deulofeu, allowed Watford to make a spectacular 2-0 comeback by defeating the Wolves 3-2 and preparing for a FA Cup final clash with Manchester City.
Matt Doherty's strikes before the break and Raul Jimenez's comeback made enough to make the Nuno Espirito Santo team the first Wolves team to reach the FA Cup final since 1960.
But Deulofeu took advantage 11 minutes from the end, but Leander Dendoncker fouled Troy Deeney and, after a VAR test, Deeney canceled the penalty to force the player to extend the allotted time.
Deulofeu produced the decisive moment of the first extra period, slipping home a great opportunity to place Watford in his first FA Cup final since 1984.
The Wolves had almost made a dramatic start to the match as Jonny's shot was over, but Watford came back for a corner that was handled confidently by goalkeeper John Ruddy.
Mariappa's foul on Diogo Jota gave Wolves a free kick as Joao Moutinho headed over the wall and slightly over the bar.
Etienne Capoue blocked a shot for Watford before Romain Saiss of the Wolves was given a yellow card for a provocative challenge in the 10th minute against Roberto Pereyra.
On the half-hour mark, Watford had his best moment so far, Deeney diving deeper into the center for Andre Gray, who could only turn the ball over.
The Wolves came back and Watford's goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes managed to stop Dendoncker's deflected shot. But from the corner, Jonny was heading towards Doherty.
Watford may have conceded a second shortly after Jota started a dangerous race, cut the inside and bent his shot very closely.
Conor Coady managed to thwart Gray after Deeney escaped.
Gomes protected Jimenez's fierce shot in the first half of the second half, and then Jota, who stretched to the far post, could not miss.
Watford defender Craig Cathcart scored the goal by blaming Jota for a foul on the edge of the box. Ruben Neves' free-kick was close to the target, Gomes failing.
As the hour approached with Watford, but Deeney headed straight for the goal and Jose Holebas was doomed to foul Jota while he was leading a breakaway against the Wolves.

As Watford increased the pressure, the Wolves brought in the defender Ryan Bennett for Neves and Ivan Cavaleiro for Jota, Holebas fighting for the Hornets as the time started to pass.
But with seconds to go, Dendoncker forced Deeney to give his line of life to the striker. The calm of the attacker allowed him to extend the match.
Jonny's ball was saved by Gomes as the extra half hour began and Watford was forced to change when Holebas was replaced by Adam Masina.
The Wolves took Adama Traore to Moutinho, but with 105 minutes of play, they were late for Deulofeu, who had already bonded with Deeney and Gray before sliding a fine pass in front of Ruddy.
Daryl Janmaat replaced Kiko Femenia, then Deulofeu suffered ankle injury and had to be replaced by Ken Sema – but he had already written the Watford headlines.
