CLEVELAND, Ohio – A series of accidents on Interstate 90 early Sunday has left one dead and several injured, Ohio State Highway Patrol reported.

On-site investigators learned that before 3 am, three vehicles had been involved in an accident on the I-90 highway heading east near Eddy Road, according to a press release released by the road patrol. Two vehicles – a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis and a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup with a trailer – were off the main road.

People inside the Grand Marquis and Dodge Ram were outside their vehicle, trying to load the damaged vehicle onto the van's trailer, the statement said. Then, a 2019 Kia Sportage drifted into the berms and hit two people standing on the shoulder.

The Kia finally stopped in the central lane of I-90, the statement said.

One of the men affected by the Sportage, James Blankenship, 56, of Willowick, was killed in the accident. His 26-year-old son, who was not named by the authorities, was seriously injured and taken to university hospitals.

The 36-year-old Kia Sportage driver was slightly injured and taken to university hospitals for treatment, officials said.

After the first fatal accident, police officers from Bratenahl on marked cruise vehicles were on scene. One of the cruisers was stopped by an eastbound vehicle, said the road patrol. The struck cruiser unleashed a chain reaction that caused the collision of two other vehicles sitting in the traffic.

The Bratenahl policeman involved in the accident of the cruiser car was treated and released from the hospital. The driver of the car who hit the police car was taken to the hospital for treatment, officials said. The occupants of the other two vehicles were not injured.

Investigators estimate that alcohol and / or drug use is a determining factor in both accidents. The authorities have indicated that accidents are still under investigation and that charges should be laid.
